History & Culture
Bohinj was a highly isolated valley through several centuries. It developed a unique culture, starting from the bronze age. Interesting museums, churches, cemeteries and monuments will tell you the story.
What to visit
Gothic church of St. John the Baptist is located right on the shores of the Bohinj lake. A stone's throw from Hotel Stare you can visit the World War I Military Cemetery. In Studor village you can admire a very well preserved group of hayracks and toplars (double hayracks) or visit the Oplen House, a homestead from the begining of the 19th century. There are also an Alpine Dairy Museum, Tomaž Godec museum, Polajnar gallery, archeological point Ajdovski gradec and others, definitely worth a visit.
The origin of Bohinj (a myth)
God was giving land to people and as he finished he realized that he had forgotten about a small group of people, who were silent and didn't hustle like the others. Because of their modesty and patience he felt pity for them. That is why he decided to give them the most beautiful land of them all, which he had spared for himself. It's called Bohinj, because we call God "Boh".
